What’s on

In addition to the events on our community events calendar we also run several large annual events. Information on these is available below or keep an eye on our enews bulletin or Facebook page in the lead up for more information.

  • Australia Day events and awards - January

In celebration of all of the things that make our nation great, council hosts a number of community events on 26 January.

These free festivities are held annually in Emerald, Blackwater, Springsure or Rolleston and Capella or Tieri.

Citizenship ceremonies are also an important part of our Australia Day celebrations.

Council’s annual Australia Day awards are endorsed by the Federal and Queensland Governments in line with the national Australia Day awards.

Each year, the program recognises local residents and organisations for their outstanding contributions to the region.

    The award categories are:

    • Citizen of the Year
    • Young Citizen of the Year
    • Community Event of the Year
    • Senior Sports Person / Sports Administrator
    • Junior Sports Person
    • Cultural Award

Each category has a winner from the Blackwater / Duaringa area, Capella / Tieri area, Emerald / Gemfields area and Springsure / Rolleston area. Winners are announced at council’s Australia Day celebrations across the Central Highlands on 26 January.

  • 2021 Central Highlands Sports Forum - May

The Central Highlands Sports Forum is off the bench and back for another year, with a knock-out line-up of presenters ready to help local clubs reach their full potential both on and off the field.

Traditionally focused on club development and governance, this year’s event has been expanded to incorporate a variety of topics including nutrition, inclusivity, and exercise physiology.

The forum is a free event and will be held at the Emerald McIndoe Function Centre from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on Sunday 16 May 2021. Catering provided.

Spaces are limited. To register your spot, head to our Eventbrite page here.

  • Clean Up Australia Day - March

Bring the family and step up to clean up Australia on Sunday 7 March.

Registrations for council’s annual Clean Up Australia Day (CUAD) event will kick off at 8.00 am at the Emerald Botanic Gardens entrance on Opal Street (next to McIndoe Park).

Participants will be issued with a clean-up kit, including bags for recycling and general waste, and allocated a designated site.

Don’t forget to keep any unique items you find and go into the draw for the ‘Most Unusual Item’ prize.

  • ANZAC Day - April

ANZAC Day is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, commemorated on 25 April every year.

It is a day where those Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations are honoured.

  • Arts in August

Each year, the Arts in August program promotes the diversity of the region’s thriving arts and culture sector, supporting local community projects and their development.

  • Garage Sale Trail - October

Garage Sale Trail is a not-for-profit mission that works hand in hand with local government to inspire social and environmental change.

By organising communities around Australia to hold garage sales simultaneously the event aims to promote re-use, reduce waste to landfill, enable new neighbourly connections, provide a platform for fundraising, inspire creativity and stimulate local economies.

  • Nogoa November

Nogoa November is an annual celebration of the Nogoa River revival held at the Emerald Botanic Gardens each November.

  • Light Up Your Town - December

The Central Queensland News, Radio 4HI and Emerald Chamber of Commerce partner us each year to present the Light Up Your Town competition.

The festive tradition encourages residents and businesses to adorn their premises with Christmas lights and decorations in a bid to be crowned the best.

    The award categories are:

    • Best Residential Display (winner and runner up for each of our 13 communities)
    • Best Business / Community Organisation Display
    • The Beryl Callaghan Spirit of Christmas Award
